1848 Zachary Taylor election medalet. Brass, 30 mm. Dewitt ZT 1848-15. Choice Mint State. Bright brassy surfaces show exemplary bright cartwheel lustre, resembling that found on a newly minted Sacagawea dollar. A glass reveals some old wispy hairlines and a small area of verdigris among the denticles above GE of GEN on the obverse, though they do not look as severe in hand as they do in the image. The area opposite the highest relief of Taylor's bust is soft, affecting T of FORT, H of HARRISON and E C of OKEE CHO BEE. Though Taylor was not President for long, this election is an historically vital one, following the successful single term of James K. Polk and the quick victory against Mexico in the extremely important but largely forgotten Mexican-American War. This variety, like many of the 1848 Taylor medalets, highlights many of the victories of that undercollected conflict.
