Details

1821 Peale's Philadelphia Museum token. Copper, 32 mm. Julian UN-23, Rulau-E Pa 398. SP-63 (PCGS). A superlative example of this popular early Philadelphia token, struck at the Philadelphia Mint and engraved by Christian Gobrecht. The surfaces are reflective and lustrous, fresh and frosty, with hints of mint color around some design elements and attractive medium chocolate brown throughout. While a few little marks are noted, the strike and surface quality of this piece are highly unusual for the issue. This token served as an admission ticket to the most famous museum in Philadelphia, located at this time in the top floor of Independence Hall. Charles Willson Peale was an artist, scientist, and patriarch to one of the most notable and lettered families in America; two of his sons ended up in positions of authority at the U.S. Mint. For those who have admired this issue but have waited patiently for one of superb quality, this piece fits the bill.
