Iconic Noe-1 Pine Tree Shilling, PCGS AU-55

Details

1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree shilling. Large Planchet. Noe-1. Rarity-2. 73.15 grains. AU-55 (PCGS). A positively superb example of the single most iconic of all colonial coins. While there are 30 numbered varieties of Pine Tree shillings, none evoke the respect accorded to a Noe-1: majestic, engraved in fine style, large in module and steeped with long-held recognition as the archetypical die variety of the type. Collectors who want to own just one Pine Tree shilling flock to this Noe number for all of the aforementioned reasons, and they have for centuries. Joseph B. Felt illustrated just one variety of Pine Tree shilling in his Historical Account of Massachusetts Currency; it won't take 30 guesses to pick which variety it was. Felt's plates were inspired by Martin Folkes' 1745 A Table of English Silver Coins, which also illustrated only one variety of Pine Tree shilling. The Noe-1 has been the most photogenic Pine Tree shilling since before photography.

Among Noe-1 survivors, very few are this high grade, this robust, and this attractive. While Noe-1 is a beautiful variety, and perhaps the most popular in the series, it is not empirically a rare one, enabling would-be purchasers to comparison shop through those included in major collection sales or more recent online archives. While some Mint State examples may surpass this one, one would be hard pressed to find any in the certified AU range that would equal it. The surfaces are frosty, toned and original, and essentially mark-free. It is hard to imagine a more attractive, well-preserved, and desirable specimen that isn't a Mint State gem.

Purchased in an English auction in 1966, this piece has been in the Henry P. Kendall Foundation collection ever since.
