Choice 1787 Mexico 8 Reales

SOLD

Details

Mexico. 1787 FM 8 reales. Mexico City Mint. Carlos III. AU-55 (NGC). Choice dusky metallic silver gray with frosty surfaces and bold detail. An original example, scarce as such, and not one from of the large hoards that included large numbers of 1788 through 1790 issues. Some planchet fissures are noted below central reverse, raised die injury prominent below mintmark reminiscent of the Tailbar variety on 1890-CC Morgan dollars. I once had a want list for a nice example of this date, one rich with historical import (the Constitution, state coppers, etc), and had to send the customer away with nothing better than a well circulated coin after a long search. I've kept an eye out for high grade examples ever since, and I've rarely even seen dippy sliders of this date (though they're incredibly common for slightly later issues). This piece will please some collector a great deal.
