Beautifully Toned 1781 Mexico Half Real

SOLD

Details

Mexico. 1781-FF 1/2 real. Mexico City mint. MS-62 (NGC). Pretty as a picture, with strong lustre and colorful toning on both sides. The dies are clashed, most notable in the obverse periphery, and the central reverse is a bit softly struck, as often seen on this denomination. A web of thin die cracks is seen behind the bust when examined closely, and a few others descend from Carlos' nose. Only some very minor handling is present, nothing severe. While later half reales (particularly those of Carlos IV and Fernando VII) are available in prooflike Unc from hoards, no such hoards of Carlos III pieces have ever been found. Uncs are seen here and there, but rarely this colorful and attractive. In 1781, Spain was an active participant in the fight against England during the American Revolution. Coins of this type are regularly found in the ground all over North America.
