Details

1860 Woodgate & Co. / J.N.T. Levick token. Brass, 28 mm. Miller NY 970. Dies by George H. Lovett. MS-66 (NGC). A glorious gem example of this token from one of America's leading numismatists of the Civil War era. Bright and untoned, with superb surfaces and just a few scattered flecks. While the obverse advertises a lower Manhattan liquor store, the reverse proudly exclaims that the store is "Represtd by J.N.T. Levick" around a Union shield. The ANS specimen bears an accession number from 1860, likely donated from Levick himself. Levick was a pioneering numismatist and the foremost authority on tokens in his day. He is well known for his role in large cent history, including the production of the famed "Levick Plate" of 1793 cents, and much admired by numismatic bibliophiles for the several auction catalogues that bear his name. Our friend Steve Hayden sold a similar specimen (graded MS-63 raw) in 2012 for $260.
