Ireland. 1602 penny. Elizabeth I. Fine. This is a vital a type to early American numismatic history as a substantial number of this type have been found in the excavations at Jamestown in very early contexts. In the ruins of James Fort itself, this is by far the most commonly found copper coin, suggesting that someone brought a significant group of these to Jamestown to circulate, rather than just a few odd pieces being mixed into immigrant's pocket change. This one is far nicer than the ones dug in Virginia, with a nice clear date, nearly complete peripheral legends, and bold devices. The surfaces are medium brown and a little granular, but this issue just plain doesn't come choice and glossy. A little upturned rim flaw is noted just left of 12:00 on the obverse. Quite pleasing for one of these overall.
