George Washington Hobo Nickel carving by Ron Landis. Landis #41, carved in 1994. As issued. An important and unique engraving by the best known of the modern Hobo engravers, carved within a year of his first Hobo Nickel attempt in 1993. The portrait of Washington is three-quarter right, engraved in high relief with extensive pushed metal on the portrait and basined fields around it. G. WASHINGTON is inscribed at the left periphery. Creation of a work of art like this can take dozens of hours, with every stroke accomplished by hand engraver. This piece appears in the published corpus of Landis engravings and has not been previously offered publicly; it was acquired from the artist in 1994. Though Ron has accomplished more Hobo Nickels in recent years, this remains his only Washington portrait. This would be a centerpiece in an advanced collection of Washingtoniana.
