I delight in the unique ability of historical objects to unite us with our past, to let us stand shoulder to shoulder with the giants of our history, and to teach us about how our struggles and triumphs were the same as theirs.

Like so many pursuits, the more you learn about numismatics, the more fun you're apt to have as a hobbyist. If your approach is closer to that of an investor than a hobbyist, the importance of this advice is magnified.

While spending a week in a library or an undertaking a lifetime study of major collections is an opportunity most of us would love to have, few have that luxury. Despite this, there is no excuse for ignorance, as there is too much information available too easily, even if not entirely at one's fingertips. Ignorance is gleeful disregard for the ability to improve one's knowledge - it is not the same as inexperience!
