Very Rare McClellan Civil War Dog Tag, A Type Missing From Ford

SOLD

Details

(1862) Major General George B. McClellan / Peninsular Campaign Civil War dog tag. Bronze, 19 mm. Maier and Stahl McClellan 1D. DeWitt GMcC 1864-30. Inscribed to Hiram Shell of the 18th New York Cavalry. Shell, a private in Company D, served as a farrier in the unit, which was attached to the Army of the Gulf and spent most of its service time in Texas and Louisiana. He mustered out at Victoria, Texas in May 1866 and returned to civilian life as a blacksmith in upstate New York. This is a highly elusive variety of Civil War dog tag, one completely missing from John Ford's extensive collection. Its size, the same as a small cent, makes it appealing to Civil War token collectors, and its inclusion in DeWitt gives it appeal to political medalet enthusiasts as well. Maier and Stahl (Identification Discs of Union Soldiers in the Civil War, an excellent reference) list it as "Rare." In the appendix, the authors list 16 different specimens they found in an extensive survey of collectors, dealers, and publications, including one example from Delaware, two from Massachusetts, three from Pennsylvania, six from New York, and four from United States units. I once owned a Maryland piece (which sold almost instantly to a noted expert, who recognized how rare it was; at the time, I did not), and Steve Hayden had a very cool New York Sharpshooters piece that sold on eBay last year.

This one has attractive glossy medium brown surfaces with brassy highlights and some violet and blue toning on the reverse. Like most of these, it was gently cleaned a long time ago; only minor hairlines are seen under a glass. Light natural wear is seen. The reverse lettering is crisply punched and no notable problems are present.
