1867 Cyrus W. Field Atlantic Cable medal. Bronze, 102 mm. Julian PE-10. Mint State. One of the most imposing and impressive medals in the entire US Mint medal catalogue, struck to mark the world-shrinking technological achievement of laying a telegraph cable between North America and Europe. Though 125 specimens are recorded as being struck in bronze, this medal is unusually tough to find, and just a few examples have sold in the last several years. This one boasts excellent color, deep mahogany that is slightly uneven, and fine surfaces that retain good gloss and some light reflectivity. A couple little specks are seen in the obverse field, no major marks, not a single rim bruise despite the large size and clumsiness of this medal. A few little nicks are seen. The devices show no friction, and the detail is bold. Aside from the US Mint medal series, this medal is of obvious interest to those who collect the history of technology, maps, ships and nautical themes, and more.
