1861 Washington / A DECISIVE WAR Anti-Confederate medal. White metal, 25 mm. Baker-282. Extremely Fine. Struck with integral loop at 12:00. A great rarity in the Washington series, called Rarity-9 in the Rulau-Fuld edition of Baker. I've owned one before and know of perhaps 3 or 4 others, the most recent of which was one missing its loop, sold in a 2008 Stack's sale. This one is lightly worn on the very high relief full-standing portrait of Washington, but shows strong lustrous flash at the obverse periphery and around the central device. The fields have mellowed and lightly toned, a bit darker on reverse than obverse though some lustre likewise remains on that side. The obverse legend reads "The Founder of Our Union 1776," while the reverse reads "A Decisive War Only Can Restore Peace and Prosperity 1861." In other words: only kicking the crap out of the Confederacy will rebuild the Union, not a treaty or diplomacy. DeWitt recorded a similar medal with this reverse as DeWitt C 1861-12, which he knew only from a listing in the 1878 Holland sale. This medal would have also been listed, had it been common enough for him to have seen it! David Alexander, cataloguing for Stack's in 2008, noted he had never seen one with the original integral loop. Michael Hodder, in Ford II (2004), called this medal "extremely rare" and noted remembering only the Garrett, McSorley, and Ganter specimens. Ford was likewise missing its loop. This piece's provenance is august, offered in the June 1975 Bowers and Ruddy sale of the Stanley Scott Collection (the original lot ticket remains with it). Mr. Scott donated the bulk of his early Washingtoniana to Mount Vernon, where it remains on display in their administration building.
