1861 I AM READY / The Union Must & Shall Be Preserved token. Silvered brass, 32 mm. Fuld 147/227fp, DeWitt C 1861-6. Rarity-6. MS-63 (NGC). The single finest example of this variety certified by NGC. A fully lustrous specimen, even a bit reflective in areas, with intact silvering on both sides though its brightness has toned down a bit in the upper obverse fields. Fully struck and problem free, with just some harmless light specks around the lower obverse periphery. The L on the left sleeve of the obverse figure is the signature of John Lovett of New York. This is one of the most distinctive pieces in the patriotic Civil War token series and one of the few cross-listed in the DeWitt book that doesn't depict a candidate. DeWitt included it among his anti-Confederate medalets, an apt placement considering the legends. While relatively high grade pieces are around, most show some wear and lack some of their silvering. This one is world class.
