1797 (i.e. 1859) Washington Sansom Medal. Silver, 40.7 mm. Baker-72, Julian PR-1. Mint State. 392.3 grains. Plain edge. U.S. Mint replacement die, produced by making hubs from John Reich's original dies of 1806. Brightly reflective on the reverse with beautiful highlights of gold and pale blue, somewhat more sedate on the obverse with deep gray toning and golden highlights framing the lustrous fields. Some minor hairlines are present in obverse fields, along with some light spotting at obverse periphery, but colorful and essentially perfect on the reverse. A very scarce Mint medal, struck by Mint Director Snowden when the formation of his Washington Cabinet was at the forefront and the public appetite for Washingtoniana was at its early height. Just 57 were struck in silver from these dies.
