Details

1856 James Buchanan campaign medal. DeWitt JB 1856-7. White metal, 35 mm. MS-62 (NGC). Choice and lustrous, with flashy prooflike fields and exceptional eye appeal. A glass shows just the most minor marks here and there. If this was in a slab graded a point or two higher, no one would raise an eyebrow. Signed under the bust truncation "F.B.S. and H., N.Y.," this was struck by F.B. Smith and Hartmann, the well known New York coining firm who also produced political medalets for Millard Fillmore and John C. Fremont. Buchanan material is scarce as a rule. There are a few common medalets that typically come in worn condition, the large and impressive inaugural medal by Paquet, and the popular Buck-Cannon rebus medal that draws attention whenever it sells (in addition to teaching us modern folk the real way to pronounce his name). This one offers the same sort of platitudes that defined Buchanan's failed administration, that the Union was to remain "one and indivisible" at all costs and "the crisis demands his election," an egotistical nod to his wealth of experience. This high grade and unholed specimen would make a fine addition to a collection of Presidential campaign material.
