Details

1844 James K. Polk / George M. Dallas campaign medal. DeWitt JP1844-1. White Metal, 45 mm. MS-62 (NGC). Holed for suspension, as issued. One of the classics in American political medals, a well-known rarity and the first jugate depiction of a presidential candidate and his vice-presidential candidate. Any Polk medal is scarce, any Polk medal in nice grade is rare, and this popular type in nice grade is a top shelf political collectible. The reverse die is signed "Wagner F,," probably the mark of William Wagner of York, Pennsylvania, an engraver who also worked on bank notes and, after 1840, served as the mayor of that borough. Given that George Dallas was a Pennsylvania boy, it's perhaps unsurprising that this supportive medal would come from his home state. The reverse legend "Success Will Crown Our Efforts" surrounds an allegorical figure sitting amidst a wooly ram, a spinning jenny, a hogshead marked TOBACCO, and a sailing vessel, indicative of American agriculture and manufactures thriving abroad.

The surfaces of this piece are only barely toned, still lustrous and warm, smooth and attractive despite some subtle hairlines. While most survivors of this rare issue are more or less encrusted in tin pest, this piece shows just the barest scattering of light tin corrosion at the left and bottom obverse peripheries, and a bit at the right side of the reverse. While I can't claim to have done a census of this issue, of the perhaps two dozen or so that survive, this likely ranks in the top half dozen. It would be a star attraction in any collection of political medals, and it ranks as an underrated American historical medal even divorced from its usual political-collecting context.
