Boldly Lustrous 1834 Running Boar Hard Times Token

Details

1834 Running Boar / Andrew Jackson Hard Times token. Low-8, HT-9, Dewitt CE 1834-9. Rarity-1. MS-64 BN (NGC). A glorious example of this popular type, resplendent with cartwheel lustre over both obverse and reverse. The surfaces are even rich dark chocolate brown, enlivened with abundant mint red around legends and devices, not enough to call this a "RB" piece, but certainly enough to make it more attractive and appealing than a typical brown specimen. The strike is definitive, with raised die finish lines visible all over the fields and MY THIRD HEAT crystal clear on the boar. Little separates this piece from a gem, and magnification reveals just a little planchet chip left of Jackson's bust, a single contact mark right of it, and a single contact mark below CY of CURRENCY. While this token is no great rarity, if this piece was a large cent it would be in a 66 holder. A superb example of this political type.
