Details

1826 Erie Canal Completion medal. Silver. HK-1000. MS-61 (PCGS). A lustrous, glowing, beautifully toned specimen of this classic early American medal. Both sides shows bright pastel blue mingled with violet and subtle gold, the obverse fields somewhat more reflective than those on the reverse. Some evidence of handling is present, but the eye appeal is easily that of a couple grades higher, despite light hairlines under the toning and some scattered marks. This is a considerably more attractive piece than most seen at this grade level certified by either service. The cloudiness seen across the reverse in the image is on the slab, not the medal. Silver examples of Charles Cushing Wright's Erie Canal medal have long been among the most in-demand medals of this era, representing not just an important historical moment but one of the high points of medallic design in the early Republic. Examples this nice are very scarce today.
