1821 Peale's Philadelphia Museum token. Copper, 32 mm. Julian UN-23, Rulau-E Pa 398. Extremely Fine. Choice glossy medium brown with some remaining lustre and exceptional eye appeal. A glass picks up some scattered light marks and evidence of handling, a few little hairline scratches blend into central reverse, nice clean rims, tiny rim cud under 4 of the date. Engraved by Christian Gobrecht and struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this token served as an admission ticket to the most famous museum in Philadelphia, located at this time in the top floor of Independence Hall, mammoth and all. Charles Willson Peale was an artist, scientist, and patriarch to one of the most notable and lettered families in America; two of his sons ended up in positions of authority at the U.S. Mint.
