Spectacular 1798 Spanish One Escudo. MS-64 (NGC)

Details

Spain. 1798-MF 1 escudo. Madrid mint. MS-64 (NGC). A world-class specimen of this diminutive Spanish gold denomination, one whose relatively low value assured most examples a long lifetime in circulation. This example is highly lustrous, full of frost and satiny cartwheel, bright and attractive on both sides. Faint remains of adjustment marks are visible at the precise center of the obverse. Only a few faint lines are seen under a glass, none of which would preclude this from full gem quality were it a U.S. coin of the era.

This is one of six coins graded MS-64 at NGC of this entire type and one of two for this date, and this piece is surpassed by just a single 1799 graded MS-65. While lightly circulated examples -- even fairly pretty ones -- are something close to commonplace, examples that look anything close to this one and maintain generous original surface are highly elusive. This would pair perfectly with a high grade 8 reales (worth one half of the face value of this coin) or a type set of gold coins of the era.
