1787 Fugio copper. Newman 12-X. Rarity-3. Pointed Rays, STATES UNITED. MS-63 BN (PCGS). A truly beautiful coin for this grade level, with superb warm lustrous cartwheel on both sides and a good bit of original mint color surrounding FUGIO. The surfaces are frosty and choice, chocolate brown with tinges of blue. The fields and devices are notably free of marks and planchet defects. Indeed, this piece has the sort of look and color that is usually associated with a 64 grade, but something tells me it was mildly net-graded for being very lightly off-center -- to 4:00 on the obverse and 2:00 on the reverse. Two little raised bumps on the rim near 9:00 on the obverse are natural features of the planchet and not rim bruises; they would have been struck out with a centered strike. Choice Fugios are not easy to find anymore, and even many graded a bit higher have one issue or other. This one will please anyone who sees it in hand.
