Details

1787 Fugio copper. Newman 13-X. Rarity-1. Pointed Rays, STATES UNITED. AU-55 (PCGS). A nice, wholesome example of this popular type coin, undoubtedly one of the hundreds of survivors of this variety that was discovered in the vault of the Bank of New York about 1856, the remnants of Royal Flint's 1789 purchase of the undistributed Fugio mintage. Frosty medium brown with halos of olive around devices, with particularly good lustre for the grade around the reverse. A little planchet flaw is present at 7:00 at the reverse periphery, some scattered microscopic striations, very sharp and showing no real issues. The dies are twice clashed, plainly visible on the obverse under a glass. A strong, attractive type example of the first Federally authorized coin, perennially popular with collectors of all sorts.
