1783 Washington Large Military Bust copper. Baker-4, Vlack 6-E. AU-55 (PCGS). Choice glossy deep brown and olive with excellent visual appeal and only the most minor scattered marks. Far finer than normally encountered - though this type was likely not struck until 1820 or nearly that late, most examples seen are well worn and Mint State specimens represent a significant rarity. PCGS has certified a Mint State one on 13 occasions, though the logjam of MS-62s (8 of them) and rarity of MS-63s (just 1) suggests how many resubmissions may have been made to get to that MS-63 level. I've never seen one I would call Choice Mint State. The PCGS Coin Facts poster child for the MS-62 grade shows a bit more gloss, but also more marks. This one is among the nicest around at this choice AU grade level. From the Ted Craige Collection.
