1781 Battle of Doggersbank award medal. Silver, 36 x 29 mm. Betts-585. Choice Very Fine. A distinctive entry in the Betts series, not just for its unusual oval shape (though it is decidedly unusual in that regard) but also for its status as an actual awarded military decoration (not a commemorative medal), presented to veterans of this naval battle between the Dutch and English. Doggersbank was a celebrated battle in the Netherlands, spawning several medals, all of them listed in Betts. By the time the battle was fought in August 1781, the Dutch were in clear violation of the Treaty of Armed Neutrality, giving material assistance to the American cause. The English, recognizing this fact, took them to task and chased their merchant ships and naval forces around the Atlantic. At Doggersbank in the North Sea, the underdog Dutch fought the Royal Navy to something of a draw, making it a major upset.

This medal exists in both gold and silver, with gold specimens going to high ranking Dutch officers and silver ones going to those of a lower rank. Gold medals are extremely rare, and silver ones are also elusive. This one lacks its loop and shows clear wear from display. The surfaces are pleasant medium gray with some dusky and golden tones, lightly handled and showing some minor marks and hairlines. The obverse is a bit brighter than the reverse. With so few medals commemorating naval battles of the American Revolution (the John Paul Jones Comitia Americana medal and the handful made for the Doggersbank battle come to mind), those interested in maritime history have few Betts-listed issues of this era to pursue. This piece was clearly worn by a veteran of the battle soon after he returned to shore, giving it an especially personal historicity.
