1776 Calendar medal by Wincklemans, Brussels. Bronze (Pinchbeck), 38 mm. Extremely Fine or better. The single most popular year of calendar medals for American collectors is, unsurprisingly, 1776. While I've seen English medals of 1776 (made by John Powell in Birmingham) and a French one of this year, this is the first Belgian one I've handled. By its layout and texture, it's an apparent copy of the prolific Powell's calendar medals, though with very non-English details such as the birthday of Pope Pius VI, regnal dates of the Austrian monarchs Joseph II and Maria Theresa, and various Catholic feast days. The production quality is not quite up to Powell standards, with some as-struck planchet fissures and a large die break from 10:00 on the reverse, but the color and eye appeal is very nice overall. Little wear is seen (these are often found nearly slick or corroded from ground exposure), and just a couple spots of minor surface roughness are noted in the upper left obverse. An attractive piece, produced for use in the year of our Independence and a miracle of survival thereafter.
