1776 (ca. 1845-1860) Washington Before Boston medal. Bronze, 68 mm. Betts-543, Julian MI-1, Baker-48G. Choice About Uncirculated. Pointing hand with CUIVRE on edge. Paris Mint strike from original obverse die and copy reverse. Nice chocolate brown with strong reflectivity in the fields and attractive golden undertones. Minor scattered contact marks are seen, whisper of cabinet friction on the highest point of Washington's hair, little circular discoloration under Washington's chin and another under HOSTIBUS on the reverse. Raised die flaws off Washington's chin and below his lowest curl identify this as the original obverse die. Very nice eye appeal, a most pleasing way to represent this iconic Comitia Americana medal in your cabinet. Ranked #2 in the 100 Greatest American Medals and Tokens behind only the Libertas Americana medal.
