From the Ted Craige Collection.

Details

1760 Voce Populi Halfpenny. Zelinka 2-A, Nelson-4. Rarity-3. About Uncirculated. From StacksBowers November 2012 sale of the famed Ted Craige collection, where I described this piece as "Another superb Nelson-4, with good remaining luster on the light brown obverse and deeper mahogany brown reverse. Ideally centered on both sides, well struck on a thick planchet. A single short hairline is noted on the cheek, a tiny rim nick over P in POPULI and a few smaller ones around the reverse, a couple natural planchet chips near ribbon bows on obverse. This Craige duplicate is actually finer than the Zelinka and McGrath specimens, among many others in well-formed collections. Craige called it 'XF/AU, NICE.'" It realized $1,150.

The Craige material was a revelation in the marketplace, a fresh group of collector coins (many outstanding) that had been secreted away since 1970. Craige himself is too little known to the current generation of collectors, but he was highly regarded in the 1960s as an active collector, dealer, and researcher. This high grade Voce Populi halfpenny is accompanied by his original paper envelope and is offered at just under the price it realized in 2012.
