Details

1722 Rosa Americana penny. UTILE DULCI, Uncrowned Rose, Doubled Date. Martin 2.19-D.5, Breen-118. F-12 (NGC). Just perfect for the grade, whether that grade is Fine-12 (so says NGC) or Very Fine (so says Eric Newman several decades ago). Chocolate brown and smooth, with glossy surfaces and no marks in sight. The broadly repunched date is easy to see even without the benefit of magnification. Considering the profusion of issues most Rosa Americana issues come with in all grades, from bubbly planchets to ugly discoloration to standard circulation marks, this one stands apart despite the fact that it has a decent amount of wear. This coin remains in its commemorative NGC slab with the special Eric P. Newman collection label, and likewise comes with an old paper envelope typed by Newman upon its acquisition for $7.50 some decades ago, whereupon he graded it Very Fine. An old envelope from B.A. Seaby, London, also accompanies this choice example of one of early America's most noteworthy coinages.
